Some Things You Can Do About Your Stuttering

Growing up with a stuttering problem can be difficult at any age. If you are facing challenges because of your stuttering, there are many things you can do to help yourself. Most of all, it is important to keep in mind that stuttering is only a small part of you and you have the power to keep it from getting bigger than you are.

Learn More About Stuttering

Stuttering can seem confusing sometimes. Most people don’t know very much about stuttering, so you can help yourself and those around you by learning more about it. By learning more about stuttering, you can be less worried about it and learn to deal with it in positive ways.

Talk to Someone

It is always good to have someone to talk to about things that you are having trouble with or are learning about. The people who care about you may want to help and can be good “listeners” when you want to talk. Some good people to talk to could be your parents, your teachers, your friends or your speech teacher, if you have one.

Get Help

There are many things that you can learn to help you stutter less and stutter more easily. A speech teacher who knows about stuttering can help you understand stuttering, learn ways to control it and help you to keep stuttering from getting in your way. Speech teachers can be great listeners too!

Get Connected

If you stutter, you are not alone. By getting connected with other kids who stutter (and getting your parents connected with other parents who stutter), you can begin to know that stuttering is not that rare and that there are many other kids who are dealing with stuttering, too. In fact, by getting connected, you can learn more about stuttering and how other kids handle some of the challenges that you are facing. The NSA is here to help. Keep Talking

Stuttering can be hard to deal with and can seem like the biggest part of you at times. But really, it isn’t ever the biggest part of who you are. Think about all the things you are interested in and what you like to do. Remember, you have so many things that you are good at and no matter how much you stutter, you have a lot to contribute in the classroom and with your family and friends. Don’t let stuttering stop you from talking or from doing anything that you want to do!
