What is stuttering?

How many times have you wondered about this question?

Stuttering can be confusing.  Speech happens when your brain, lungs, vocal cords, lips tongue and teeth work together in a certain order to make talking happen.  Mostly, we know that stuttering is what happens when you have too much tension in the muscles that help you produce speech.

We also know that stuttering can feel out of control sometimes.  When your speech muscles don’t do what you want them to, it can feel like you can’t do anything to help your stuttering.  Isn’t it great to find out that even though you may feel like this sometimes, there are many things you can learn to help make your talking easier and more in your control.

There is no one reason that someone starts stuttering.  Usually, stuttering starts when children are young.  Some kids grow through it and some do not.  Right now, we don’t know why this happens or which kids will continue to stutter, but we do know that there is not one reason that some kids start to stutter.  In other words, it is no one’s fault that you stutter; you, your parents or your teachers are not to blame.

It is important for you to ask questions and learn about stuttering.  You can talk with your parents or teachers or your speech teacher, if you have one.  Also, you can write to us and we can try to answer your question.  We are here to help!  Our email is: kids@WeStutter.org.
